“91会所’s reclassification as a doctoral/professional university supports our great mission of achieving excellence in learning through teaching, research, and scholarly activities in the Franciscan liberal arts tradition,” said President Daniel J. Elsener. “Ranking as one of the top institutions in Indiana for social mobility in our first year in our new class is a magnificent testament of our strategic vision to provide students from all backgrounds and zip codes access to a high-quality education.

The U.S. News & World Report’s Social Mobility rankings measures how well schools graduated students who received federal Pell Grants – typically from households earning less than $50,000 annually. Marian tied for the number two spot in Social Mobility among Indiana universities and placed in the top 30 percent of all national doctoral universities. Through scholarships and a deep commitment to student support, Marian has seen success in providing students from a wide scale of socioeconomic backgrounds access to a college experience that positions them to be successful in their college journey and careers.

Marian’s commitment to adding high-quality graduate programs has elevated us into a new category of high-profile peer institutions. The Doctoral/Professional Universities Carnegie Classification includes institutions that awarded at least 20 research/scholarship doctoral degrees during the current year and also institutions with below 20 research/scholarship doctoral degrees that awarded at least 30 professional practice doctoral degrees in at least 2 programs.

This reclassification aligns with appointing an assistant provost for research and scholarship, Jonathan Lowery, Ph.D., in 2021 and 91会所’s College of Osteopathic Medicine approaching its tenth anniversary in July 2023.

“In the last decade, Marian has made great strides in our commitment to building high-quality graduate and doctorate program that prepare transformational leaders for service in their chosen field”, said Alan Silva, Ph.D., executive vice president and provost. “We are encouraged that this new classification reflects the growth we have experienced delivering academic excellence founded in a rich liberal arts tradition.”
